Prior to starting my yoga journey I was an avid runner. 3-5 times, anywhere from 5-8 miles, depending on my time.
Once I found yoga, I slowly stopped running- which I swore at the time there was no way I would ever stop running! My yoga practice replaced it and my body started to crave yoga. I really haven’t been running much at all for the past five years.
My husband and I signed up for the Disney Half Marathon this November -(his idea, not mine) and I am now one month before the race and I realized that I might want to start training! So last week I went for my first 8 mile run since 2017. And here is what shocked me!
It was not nearly as hard as I remember it! Last time I trained for almost 8 months and it was hard. I never ran for enjoyment. I often struggled to get through and mentally could not wait for the run to be over.
But last week- it was almost easy for me! Surprised by this I realized it has to be from the endurance I have build up from hours and hours of yoga practice.
- Practicing hot yoga allows your body to rely on its breath with is essential for building endurance.
- Hot yoga also builds strength in your overall body but especially your feet, allowing the feet to handle the pressure of consistent running.
- Heat acclimation- this helps your body cope with the added stress of running in the heat
- Mindfulness- yoga teaches you to link the mind and body to one. It allows you to not focus on the discomfort of running, but on the connection between the mind and body.
The race is in three weeks- and I’m curios to see if I am able to beat my previous time with only have started actually running three weeks prior to the raise. It will be interesting to see!
